Silicone moulds are a long-term investment — with the right care, they'll give you hundreds of perfect casts. Whether you're pouring wax melts or casting resin, a little maintenance goes a long way. Here's everything you need to know to keep your moulds in top condition.
Cleaning After Wax Melt Use
Wax is one of the easiest materials to clean from silicone:
- Allow any remaining wax to cool and set fully.
- Flex the mould gently to crack and release any residue.
- Wipe out the cavities with a dry cloth or kitchen paper.
- Wash with warm (not boiling) soapy water and a soft cloth or sponge.
- Rinse thoroughly and leave to air dry completely before storing.
Tip: If fragrance oil has left a slight residue, a drop of washing-up liquid and a warm rinse will clear it.
Cleaning After Resin Use
Resin requires a little more care:
- Allow the resin to cure fully before attempting to clean — partially cured resin is much harder to remove.
- Once the cast is removed, any thin resin film left in the mould can usually be peeled away by flexing the silicone.
- Wipe cavities with a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol (IPA) to remove any remaining residue.
- Follow with a warm soapy water wash and rinse well.
- Air dry fully before the next use.
Note: Never use acetone or harsh solvents on silicone — they can degrade the material over time.
What to Avoid
- Abrasive scrubbers or scouring pads — these scratch the surface and can affect the finish of future casts.
- Sharp utensils — avoid using knives or metal tools inside the mould cavities.
- Boiling water — very high temperatures can warp some moulds over time.
- Acetone, bleach, or harsh chemicals — these degrade silicone and shorten mould life.
- Storing while damp — always dry fully before storing to prevent any odour build-up.
- Food use of any kind — our moulds are for wax and resin use only and are not food safe.
Storage Tips
- Store moulds flat or hanging — avoid folding or stacking heavy items on top, which can distort the shape.
- Keep away from direct sunlight and heat sources, which can cause discolouration over time.
- Store in a cool, dry place — a drawer or shelf away from your workspace is ideal.
- If stacking multiple moulds, place a sheet of tissue or cloth between them to prevent sticking.
How Long Do Silicone Moulds Last?
With proper care, a quality silicone mould can last for hundreds of uses. Signs it's time to replace a mould include visible tears, permanent discolouration, or a loss of flexibility that affects demoulding.
